Certified - What does that mean?

Certified translations are often required when a legal or official document must be presented to an authority.

Such translations must be carried out by a sworn translator.

In these documents, the correctness and completeness of the completed translation are certified in accordance with Section 142 (3) of the German Code of Civil Procedure (ZPO), including the place, date and, depending on the federal state, the translator's stamp.

What is an apostille?

The German Foreign Office provides the following information on its website:
In states which are party to the Hague Convention abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents of 5 October 1961, public documents no longer need to be legalised. All that is required for these documents is the so-called “Hague apostille”.

The “Hague apostille” confirms the authenticity of a public document, the original of which must be submitted to the designated authority.

You can usually obtain the address of the relevant apostille authority from the office that issued the document. Another option is to contact either the administration of justice or the registrar's office of the district where the document was issued.
